Tiananmen Square Beijing China April 15 - June 4 1989
What began as university student-led protests against government corruption, inflation, and workers rights, quickly became a movement for greater freedoms by the people of China. At times, more than 1 million people filled the square to demand reforms from the Chinese Communist Party. By the end of May, martial law was declared and troops began to move in. On the night of June 3rd, troops and tanks cleared the square in what is known as the June 4th massacre. Check out these videos to find out more.
